Troubleshooting
There is no helpdesk or forum. These hints cover the most common issues people encounter. If something is not listed here, the build guides are the best starting point.
NMEA WiFi Bridge
- No UDP packets received. Check the device is on the same WiFi network as your client. In AP mode the bridge creates its own network — connect to it directly. UDP is broadcast on port 10110; ensure your client software is listening on that port.
- Device not appearing in WiFi scan. Hold the boot button for 3 seconds to reset to AP mode. The SSID is
NMEA-Bridgeby default. Connect with passwordnmeabridgeand visit192.168.4.1to reconfigure. - No serial data from instrument. NMEA 0183 is 4800 baud by default — some instruments use 38400. Check the baud rate in the web configuration page. Also verify the wiring: Tx on the instrument connects to Rx on the bridge.
- Firmware flash fails mid-way. Use a quality USB-C cable — data-only cables will not work. Try a different browser; Chrome or Edge work most reliably with Web Serial. Hold the boot button when connecting if the device does not enter flash mode automatically.
NMEATouch20
See the quick start guide for setup instructions.
- Blank or white screen after flashing. The display driver requires the full four-part flash including the LittleFS partition. If you flashed only the firmware binary, reflash using the installer button on the project page — it writes all partitions in the correct order.
- No AIS targets shown. Confirm the device has joined the correct WiFi network (shown on the settings screen). The UDP source must broadcast on port 10110. AIS sentences begin with
!AIVDM— verify your data source is transmitting them. - Touch not responding accurately. Run the touch calibration from the settings screen. This stores calibration offsets to the SD card; an SD card must be inserted for calibration to be saved between power cycles.
- Trip log not saving. The odometer and encounter history require a FAT32-formatted micro-SD card in the slot on the back of the unit. The SD icon in the top-right corner of the screen indicates whether the card is detected.
- COG compass not moving. The compass derives heading from GPS course over ground — it requires a GPS fix and forward motion. It will not respond to physical rotation of the unit while stationary.
Reference setup
If you want to see a known-working hardware combination, the test setup page describes the exact equipment used during development — a Matsutec HP 528A AIS transponder, an NMEA WiFi Bridge, and two NMEATouch20 units, tested over three years in northern Europe.
